Does Metal Fencing Rust?

Metal Mates • September 2, 2022

You've just installed a metal fence on your property, and you're loving the look and feeling great about its durability. But as time passes, you notice your fence is rusting. Your once beautiful, sturdy fence has become weakened and unattractive. You'll probably agree with us that rust and fences aren't a good combination. If you're wondering whether your metal fence is likely to rust, read our helpful guide to ensure you're in the know.

Rust and corrosion

"Rust" and "corrosion" are used interchangeably, but what do they really mean? Corrosion is a chemical process occurring in metals containing iron. Over time, the metal reacts with oxygen, moisture or water and breaks down, forming a reddish-brown compound we know as rust.

Metal fences and rust

If you're wondering whether your fence will rust, the good news is that with the modern fencing materials on the market this doesn't happen very often. As most metal fences are made to a high quality, with the right protection and level of care they won't experience any corrosion during their lifespan.

This is largely due to the galvanisation and powder coating of steel. In galvanisation, steel is treated with zinc to deter rust from forming on its surface, and powder coating offers an extra level of protection against the elements. Both galvanisation and powder coating are great ways of protecting metals from the wind and the weather and ensuring they maintain their quality for years to come. This doesn't mean you don't need to look after your fence, though - regular cleaning and painting is needed to keep rust at bay and to make sure your fence keeps looking its best.

While steel's a great fencing material, it may not hold up as well if you live in an area with extreme weather conditions. If you're worried about how your fence might hold up, you might opt instead for an aluminium fence. Aluminium doesn't contain any iron, so is naturally unable to rust. In fact, water or moisture have the opposite effect on aluminium - they cause oxidation, which actually makes aluminium a stronger material, though it will detract from the look of your aluminium fence.

Aluminium's natural rust-resistance means it won't require further treatment or the same level of care as a galvanised fence, though it's recommended you do check your fence from time to time for scratches or areas that might have oxidation. Most aluminium fences are still powder coated to prevent oxidation from occurring, and for added durability and visual appeal.
